Operated as a 200-acre sugar cane
plantation from the late 1700's to the early 1940's, Río
Grande Plantation was a renowned producer of high quality
sugar cane. Sugar mills in the cities of Canóvanas and
Fajardo competed for the plantation crop. As the economy
shifted from agriculture to manufacturing, the sugar mills
closed and the plantation was divided among the heirs into
many small farms. Each heir received one equally divided
lot. Due to squabbling among these heirs, the property was
non-producing for many years. Being in the third leg of the
Bermuda Triangle, the intrigue and stories are numerous.
In early 1985, Oliva and Emilio Ríos, owners of Fisherman's
Wharf Catering Service, began contacting these heirs with
the intention of purchasing the land. For 17 years, Mr. Ríos
had been the manager of the Banker's Club, an executive
banquet facility in the heart of San Juan's financial
district (la milla de oro). In 1986, they purchased six of
these farms with the option for an additional twenty-two
acres. In addition, a seventy-five acre farm, located one
half mile from the plantation, is also owned and operated by
the Ríos'.
Río Grande Plantation Eco Resort was born. The resort is set
on forty acres containing recreation, banquet, meeting and
lodging facilities. It has become the island favorite of
both locals and visitors to Puerto Rico alike. A refreshing
and relaxing atmosphere of a plantation country estate
awaits you. With 30,000 feet of covered pavilion space, the
elements and number of guests are never a problem.
In Puerto Rican mythology, the El Yunque Rain Forest is the
home of the God of good. El Yunque Rain Forest is one of a
very few environmentally necessary resources that is
actually expanding. Set in the lavishly green foothills of
El Yunque Rain Forest, the plantation provides a spectacular
setting for any event.
The mountain spring-fed Río Grande River, which is clean and
rarely rushed, flows across the property. Eastern trade
winds frequently bring a short afternoon shower, keeping the
flora and fauna tropical green year-round, while holding the
temperature a few degrees lower than the city. With
sixty-three individual species of fruit trees, various
tropical flowers, and abundant wildlife on the property,
visitors are able to experience the ambiance of the only
rain forest in the United States National Forest System. Two
walking trails have been carefully prepared for a close-up
natural experience.
Located five miles from one of the most popular and beautiful
beaches in Puerto Rico (Luquillo Beach) and only twenty
minutes from San Juan's bustling Luis Muñoz Marín
International Airport, El Yunque attracts thousands of
visitors each year.
As the need of individuals and groups increased for a closer
experience to nature, Río Grande Plantation Eco Resort
opened a new nine villa lodge. With all the amenities of the
city, the relaxed elegance provides a tranquil setting for
getting away from it all. Each 800 to 1200 square foot loft
suite looks out upon a double level patio deck and includes
cable TV, VCR, micro fridge, microwave and Jacuzzi.
